Art History Seminars with Prof. Dr. Marcus Graf (Art in Türkiye) 1-5

The titles of our 5-week seminar program are: Roots of Modern Art in Turkey, Art in the Early 20th Century in Turkey, Post-War Art in Turkey, Art in Turkey 1980-1990, Contemporary Art in Turkey After 2000.

This package covers lessons 1-5.

Week 1: The Roots of Modern Art in Turkey

This seminar focuses on the beginnings of Turkish figurative art in the Ottoman Empire from the mid-19th century onwards, in terms of developments in art production, art education and the way art was exhibited. In this context, the seminar begins with the “Soldier Painters” who bring together the first traces of the Western understanding of art with Turkish art and progresses to the works of early Modern - Avant-garde artists in the mid-20th century.

Week 2: Art in Turkey at the Beginning of the 20th Century

Participants will have the opportunity to examine the artistic developments in Türkiye between 1900 and 1945 within the scope of the seminar "Art in Türkiye at the Beginning of the 20th Century" with Marcus Graf. The effects of the Western avant-garde movements on the Turkish art scene, from the İbrahim Çallı generation to Group D, will be explained.

Week 3: Post-War Art in Turkey

Within the scope of “Post-War Art in Türkiye 1950 - 1980”, participants will have the opportunity to discuss and examine the journey of art in a wide range, starting from the important abstract art called the Paris school of Turkish art history and extending to the conceptual and multidisciplinary approach of the 1979s.

Week 4: Art in Turkey 1980-1990

In this seminar, we will be examining art and its context in Türkiye in the 80s and 90s. Prof. Dr. Marcus Graf reveals artistic strategies that go beyond traditional methods and principles to build the foundations of today's art. Participants will gain insight into how contemporary approaches in conceptual art, installation art and performance art have gained wider recognition and acceptance.

Week 5: Contemporary Art in Turkey After 2000

In this seminar, Prof. Dr. Marcus Graf discusses the current state of contemporary art in Türkiye. Participants will learn about prominent artists in various disciplines to understand the conceptual and formal strategies of today's art.
