Lesson 5: Emotion and Thought - The Art of Romanticism

Romantic art represents a turning point in the history of art, as it laid the foundations on which later modern art would be based. In this seminar, Prof. Dr. Marcus Graf discusses the art of the late 19th century, when artists such as Friedrich, Delacroix and Goya began to share their subjective feelings and thoughts by using their creative imagination.

Lesson 6: Reality and Representation - The Art of Realism

In the mid-19th century, artists such as Courbet and Millet transformed art into a platform for critically reflecting on the social reality of society. The representation of real-life events, not the imagination of fiction, and the communication of realism, not the creation of artistic illusion, were forces that changed the concept of art forever.

Lesson 7: Observation and Formalism - The Art of Impressionism

In the second half of the 19th century, artists such as Renoir and Monet believed that the independence and autonomy of art would be its most important value. At the same time, they understood that this goal could only be achieved if artists abandoned their old tasks of representation and expression. That is why the Impressionists focused on more formal and internal issues such as composition and paint, as well as examining art in optical terms such as light and color.

Lesson 8: Formalism and Expressionism - Post Impressionism Art

Prof. Dr. Marcus Graf will examine the founders of modern art at the end of the 19th century, who laid the foundations for later modern avant-garde movements such as Fauvism, Expressionism or Cubism. In this seminar, the review of the works of Cezanne, Van Gogh and Gauguin will help to understand how modern art emerged from the individual struggles of a few exceptional artists who later revolutionized art.
