Marcel Duchamp and the Temptation of the Copy

Curated by Paul B. Franklin, an internationally renowned expert on the life and work of Marcel Duchamp, the Peggy Guggenheim Collection presents Marcel Duchamp and the Temptation of the Copy, through March 18, 2024. This is the first exhibition at the Peggy Guggenheim Collection dedicated to Duchamp, one of the most influential and innovative artists of the twentieth century and a longtime friend and advisor to Peggy Guggenheim.

The exhibition presents some sixty works of art dating from 1911 to 1968. These include iconic works such as Nude (Sketch), Sad Young Man on a Train (1911), and Box in a Suitcase (1935-41) from the permanent collection of the Peggy Guggenheim Collection, as well as works from other Italian and American institutions, including the Galleria Nazionale d'Arte Moderna e Contemporanea in Rome, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art in New York, and the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York. The exhibition also includes a number of works from private collections, including the artist’s estate, and many of the works on display come from the distinguished Venice collection of Attilio Codognato, who first became interested in Duchamp’s work in the early 1970s.

The exhibition is accompanied by a richly illustrated catalogue published by Marsilio Arte, which includes an important essay by curator Paul B. Franklin.

Marcel Duchamp: Exploring the "Box in a Suitcase"

The final section of the exhibition, entitled Marcel Duchamp: Discovering the Box in the Suitcase, is a scientific exhibition organized by the Department of Conservation of the Peggy Guggenheim Collection and the Opificio delle Pietre Dure in Florence. The exhibition presents the results of a scientific study carried out in two phases in 2019 and 2023 in the conservation and restoration laboratories of the Opificio delle Pietre Dure, with the support of EFG Banking, Institutional Patron of the Peggy Guggenheim Collection since 2006.
